France: the holy month in prison

Ramadan behind bars

Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam. The Muslim holy month is a time for contemplation, sharing, socialising, and spirituality. Prison Insider asked several people to tell us what Ramadan is like in prison.

Mohamed-Iqbal Zaidouni is a chaplain at the men’s prison in Rennes and president of the Regional Council of the Muslim Faith (CRCM Br). He provides spiritual and religious support to people behind bars. He describes his role as Chaplain and the practice of Ramadan in prison.

We bring dates, packet soup, and other pasteurised foods. All prisoners are eligible for these parcels if they wish.
