Philippines : inmates protest at Manila City Jail over segregation of drug suspects

Prisoners at Manila City Jail staged what authorities called a “noise barrage” on Thursday (Oct 13), protesting against the segregation of drug suspects from the general prison population, the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) said.

According to local reports, the agency’s statement said some 200 inmates from the male dormitories in the prison were involved.

The protesters - described as members of the Batang City Jail gang - were seen to have climbed onto the roofs of the prison facility as part of the demonstration.

They had been “pacified” within an hour with one inmate needing treatment for minor wounds, the BJMP was reported to have said.
