Romania could introduce electronic monitoring to reduce prison overcrowding

Romania’s Justice Ministry considers introducing electronic monitoring for convicts to reduce overcrowding in prisons, said justice minister Tudorel Toader yesterday, quoted by Mediafax.

He explained that Romania could take over a series of measures implemented by the Georgian authorities in 2012. Tudorel said that he will have talks with prison union leaders on August 8.

Romanian authorities also consider building two new prisons, modernizing the current ones, and turning former military units into prisons, the justice minister added.
