France: prisons and mental health

People with mental illness are over represented in the prison population. This group is particularly vulnerable and subjected to violence and abuse. Prison psychiatry is a sector that has undergone significant changes lately, in France and elsewhere. Where do we stand right now?

In July 2014, Adeline Hazan was appointed Controller-General for Places of Deprivation of Liberty and was recognized for her outstanding work in psychiatric institutions during her tenure. On 26 June 2019, she was invited by the Paris Bar Association to a symposium on prisons and mental health. where she spoke about prison as a care setting. Prison Insider asked her three questions.

Whether the illness was triggered by imprisonment or it existed already, it is poorly noted.

But we must not fail to notice that experiments are being carried out in different parts of France.
