France: in search of meaning

Ramadan behind bars

Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam. The Muslim holy month is a time for contemplation, sharing, socialising and spirituality. Prison Insider asked several people to tell us what Ramadan is like in prison

Sakina1 is a Muslim chaplain in prison. She guides female prisoners in their religious practice and helps them deal with incarceration better. Ramadan, daily organisation, work on self-esteem… She tells us all about it.

  1. The first name has been changed.

Female prisoners are often in search of meaning.
