Australia: prison guard hurt in 'serious' incident with inmate at Canberra jail

Police are investigating what a union official has described as a “serious” incident at Canberra’s jail, which left at least one prison guard injured.

Few details have been released about the incident, but it is believed the guard was hurt by a detainee at the Alexander Maconochie Centre on January 15.

In a statement, the Justice and Community Safety (JACS) directorate said everyone involved in the matter had received support and medical treatment.

The Community and Public Sector Union’s (CPSU) ACT secretary Vince McDevitt said he was seeking more details.
